America's Byways
Traveling New York’s America’s Byways – the Seaway Trail, the Mohawk Towpath National Scenic Byway and the Lakes to Locks Passage – is a unique way to discover our fascinating French and Indian War heritage. We invite you to experience cannon’s blast and reenactors colorfully costumed in the reds, whites, blues and buckskins of French, British, and American soldiers and Native American allies and enjoy the drive.

On your way to the original forts where the world powers fought for control of North America, follow our historic waterways – the St. Lawrence River, Lake Ontario, Niagara River and Lake Erie coastlines of the Seaway Trail, the Erie Canal of the Mohawk Towpath, and the Lake Champlain, Lake George and Champlain Canal of the Lakes to Locks Passage. These byways are among 126 routes federally designated as America’s Byways and recognized for their singular contributions to the scenic, natural, historic, cultural, and recreational heritage of America.
